*THEY’RE TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE
Someone on the other side of a computer can literally make up an entire fake identity without anyone stopping them. I’ve personally tested the most popular dating sites and social media sites to see what’s required to set up an account in a mans name with fake photos and was never once met with a site asking me to verify my identity.
*THEY FALL FOR YOU REALLLLLLLLY QUICKLY
“We have been together for nearly 2 weeks now, and I love you and even more so now. You have become a part of me that I will always cherish. I love you with all my heart, forever and always. You have brought me so much happiness. You are that person, and I have fallen in love with you. To be honest, I never thought I would ever utter those words, but now they come forth effortlessly and with great sincerity. I’ll be forever grateful to you for showing me just how shallow my life was. At last, I have a chance now to give it depth and purpose.”
This was after a purely digital romance, no phone calls, no in person meeting, no… nothing. Red flag, much?
*THEY OFTEN TRAVEL OVERSEAS FOR THEIR JOB
They just won a huge contract for their company and it’s taking them overseas and now they’re telling you about the project and the enormous profit margin. What should you do with this info? You should insist you meet them before they go overseas or insist you reconnect again once they’re back from overseas in person. Don’t waste your time on someone you haven’t met yet. This lie usually goes straight for a financial ask within weeks.
*MONEY.
What real person talks about money and needing some from you when you first start talking? Maybe a crazy person… but definitely a scammer.
*COMMUNICATION
Oh, their Skype is broken? They can’t get on the phone? They tell you they prefer to email instead of texting/calling/etc.? Sure you can listen to their excuses and think “Maybe they’re telling the truth…” OR you can think “RED FLAG RED FLAG!” and run away.
*SUPER GOOD LOOKING
I mean, we all get flattered when a super attractive person is saying super sweet stuff to you. But when the super attractive person looks glossy (like a stock photo or a celeb photo) ask for more pics, a selfie, etc. You can *always* run their photo through Google Reverse Image Search to check whether or not they’re using a photo that’s been in other places on the internet. If we had a dollar for every fake photo we’ve found…
*GRAMMAR/PUNCTUATION/COPY&PASTE
There’s a difference between “how r u doing?” and a message that says:
“I really love your everything, i want you to know that am not a temper man,all what i want is your heart and i will always be there for you for the rest of my life,no matter what happen to you,Immediately i got your email my feelings turn over on you and it seems you are the right woman which i have been searching for to bring back the smile which i use to smile when my dad was still alive,For a good relationship to grow we need to trust each other and be honest with each other to achieve what we want to achieve well i am seeking for woman which will be the flesh to my flesh and also the bone to my bone,It’s true I have never seen you and we have never met,Never shaken Hands or even truly hugged and yet!I know for sure you care for me by the kindness that you give. And our keyboards keep us together doesn’t matter where we live.So I am emailing you to put a smile on your face and to let you know in my heart you have a special place.”
Definitely a catfish scammer.
*SOB STORIES
We all have our life stories and many of them involve really really sad stuff. But sometimes with these catfish, they have these enormously far fetched lies and stories. They’ll get you invested in what remains of their life after all the tragedy they’ve endured and then when it’s time, they’ll tell you something awful happened to the last of their remaining family and ask for your help. Catfish prey on emotions and people with good big hearts. It’s why $230M was scammed out of the US in 2016 alone.
